Skill wheel was dumbed down (you no longer have inter-skill dependencies and ultimate abilities). While it definitely does have some positives (more heroes, balance changes, way better RMG), they're overshadowed by the negatives by quite a bit: "Better AI" is not really a positive/negative btw, since you can get that as a separate mod for ToE, so it's not really a 5.5 thing.įor me, it changes the game way too much. I've played it for quite a while and I came to the conclusion that the negatives outweigh the positives. If might or magic is stronger obviously also depends on the map, as that is a big factor of how big the armies are in the final fight. This makes it so that at the super lategame, any dmg-spell will obviously be underwhelming even now with the spells scaling better into late and at certain (earlier) stages, spells may be stronger.

Armysize has a roughly linear grow over time while hero-lvl, and therefor SP, has a logarithmic grow (its a little better in 5.5, as exp needed for the lvl from 25+ is reduced a little, so its easier to reach lvl 30+). This helps the balance between might and magic, but its still quiete the task, as even if spelldmg is linear to SP, SP is not proportional to armysize. In 5.5, most destra spells no longer do a fixed amount of dmg but therefore a little more SP dependent dmg, making them less overpowered in the early stages while scaling better into the late stages. The fixed dmg makes no sense, as it only increases the problem of dmg spells being overpowered early on and not scaling well into lategame. Base game spell dmg mostly consists of a fixed dmg + dmg linear dependent on SP. Also, damaging spells are usually very strong when army numbers are low, and get weaker the bigger the armies get (obviously, as the relative dmg to armysize gets lower).

This makes sense, as in the base game you would always just spam the most powerful spells you have, mana costs were rarely something to consider. In 5.5 spells are way more expensive than in the base game. The extra gain from knowledge is really a very minor thing and given the increasingly low gain from extra knowledge the more knowledge you already have, its a good step. The balance between might and magic is quiete difficult and honestly hoorible in the base game.
